Grade 10 and 11 learners from the Lawhill Maritime Centre at Simon’s Town School met Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube following her address to the Cape Town Press Club on Monday. The learners questioned the minister about the expansion of maritime education in South African schools and how her department plans to tackle learner discipline. Since 1995, Lawhill has equipped young South Africans with specialised maritime knowledge and skills during Grades 10 to 12, opening pathways into maritime and other industries. For these learners, the encounter offered something different: a chance to put their questions directly to the minister shaping education policy. Picture: Velani Ludidi/EdDesk
